Dassault Systèmes - doing more with reservoir data

Dassault Systèmes is helping oil and gas companies integrate and work with all types of reservoir data.

Dassault Systèmes supports companies to better integrate and work with their reservoir, geomechanical business and enterprise data, using the same technology which is widely used in aircraft and automotive digital modeling, simulation and manufacturing.

Dassault Systèmes, Europe's second largest software company, provides the '3DEXPERIENCE platform' an enterprise-aimed, digital business platform, which is used by many of the world's aircraft and automotive manufacturers to ensure all of the various components and systems fit and work together properly, and to understand the mechanical response of the finished product to its environment and operations.

It does this by developing a complete 3D digital representation of the physical asset with which all of the people involved can work and engage collaboratively.

The same technology and approach from the manufacturing world is now being applied in the reservoir domain, enabling all reservoir data to be integrated into a common system - a platform approach - that is connected to other business areas of exploration and production activity.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform enables integration of previously disconnected organizational silos. This is achieved by making all company and asset data universally accessible from a single source. Hosted on the cloud anyone can collaborate and communicate around business, asset and process issues using the same accurate, timely information. When this has been achieved, Andrei Kalinichev, Natural Resources Industry Solution Director, Dassault Systèmes says 'There is only one version of the truth that all stakeholders work with across the whole extended enterprise.'

Any industry specific software application, for example, reservoir or geotechnical analysis, can be seamlessly integrated with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform: This means that, in addition to providing business process management and optimization, visualization and collaborative workspace for engineers, geoscientists and management, it includes advanced simulation features. These can be used to predict or calculate many various work environment scenarios, different processes and parameters, such as how the rock will behave under the stresses of drilling and fracking, and how it may subside as the reservoir is depleted.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform integrates and web-enables a variety of local, global and cloud-based apps and works with multiple industry-standard and proprietary data sources. Corporate data and information can be viewed and managed in multiple ways to address the business needs of a company at asset and/or project level.

Business and technical information can be viewed, controlled and analysed by deploying real-time 3D visualisation. 'Collaborative visualisation is a centrepiece of our platform,' says Mr Kalinichev.

As part of the larger reservoir workflow, the platform supports commercially available flow simulation software for tight integration within a study, project or business process. The same applies to geological modelling, geomechanics and other essential reservoir software components.

Unified Reservoir Workflow

Dassault Systèmes' industry solution for better management of reservoir workflows is called 'Unified Reservoir.' It is a specifically configured application and data environment enabled by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform coupled with SIMULIA Abaqus geomechanical simulation software from Dassault Systèmes.

Unified Reservoir framework is beneficial to everyone working on the reservoir, from geologists, production engineers and managers, to field development planners and financial staff. It enables snapshot models of asset performance along with the ability to make better forecasts and decision-making. Moreover, various aspects of reservoir studies are covered in an integrated and collaborative, efficient and user-friendly fashion.

The platform can effectively catalogue, manage and control the enormous variety of different types of data which are generated about the reservoir, such as seismic acquisition, downhole sensors, well logs and completion information.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform eliminates collaboration gaps, supports knowledge exchange between different disciplines and preserves corporate memory, as a 'common tool' everybody can use.

'We treat the oilfield as a business entity that needs to be managed and controlled as a unified business asset,' Mr Kalinichev said.

As an example, one national oil company used this methodology to better understand discrepancies between its production forecasts and what actually happened. In some critical cases their technical specialists may think that most of the shortfall would probably be due to some reservoir reasons, but the platform-based look-back analysis showed that many of the production shortfalls might be due to above ground reasons, such as a
bottleneck on the topsides, or a delayed delivery of a critical component. These process-based issues are often simply overlooked, leading to potentially disappointing results and incremental costs.

Connecting relevant expertise, functionality and data, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform can be used for field development planning, drilling and completions, fracking, production optimisation workflows, and finding solutions to wellbore stability, fault re-activation, subsidence challenges and many other tasks.

Geomechanics

A core enabler of the Unified Reservoir Industry Solution is Dassault Systèmes' SIMULIA Abaqus brand application. This is a unified 3D finite element analysis simulator, used to model and simulate stress and deformation in materials across multiple industries including aerospace and automotive. It is also widely and successfully applied to simulating stress and rock behavior in oil and gas reservoirs.

Calculating reservoir stresses helps understand the forces on fluids, and wells, as well as the implications of subsidence and compaction including subsurface occurrences. It can therefore help mitigate wellbore stability issues, model rock mechanics, and manage borehole collapse.

Dassault Systèmes geomechanical simulation applications are mature industry proven technology used by 'pretty much every sizeable oil & gas company out there,' Mr Kalinichev says.

Reservoir simulator integration

Dassault Systèmes technology connects commercial flow simulation functionalities within the Unified Reservoir solution for better managed reservoir workflow processes. Mr Kalinichev says, 'Data from any commercial reservoir software on the market can be integrated, and used in conjunction with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.' This extends the value of applications by allowing many more people to utilise, and collaborate around, the data. This methodology is successfully deployed at many companies adding value to data by turning it into usable and accessible information.

Dassault Systèmes sees its role as helping put a business foundation to reservoir simulation.

Thus, traditional reservoir software is perceived and defined as an essential and very important part of the overall subsurface modelling and simulation project but not the only part. Mr Kalinichev says, 'Business process management and improvement is crucial to efficient progress. And it can be realistically achieved by deploying a unified enterprise platform. This effectively ties together multiple disciplines, technologies, data and people within an oil and gas enterprise.'

In conclusion, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform delivers previously missing business-based integration by linking the reservoir, and its data, to the rest of the enterprise, increasing its asset value for the business.

Many technical and commercial optimisation advantages and efficiency benefits can be achieved when reservoir software, and all other applications, are integrated into the overall oil and gas asset project. Owners and operators, managers, engineers and designers need to see and understand the big picture as well as the myriad tiny details. When this has been accomplished, all stakeholders, rather than taking a limited view can inter-departmentally collaborate and optimise operations as a whole.
