Emerson and Statoil partnership in reservoir uncertainty management

Friday, October 19, 2012

Emerson, owner of the Roxar reservoir software, has announced a partnership with Statoil, to help improve uncertainty management and quantification in reservoir characterisation software.

The two companies will also work on improving history matching, tweaking the reservoir model so that its output more closely matches the actual historical production of the reservoir.

The companies will develop a system to manage uncertainty through the whole process of building a reservoir characterisation model.

"The result will be more accurate and realistic production scenarios generated from numerous reservoir models," Emerson says.

Emerson is currently conducting a number of different commercial implementation projects for Statoil, including developing systems to manage horizon and fault uncertainty, expected to be made available in early 2013.

Following the project, Emerson will make improvements to its "Roxar ENABLE" history matching and uncertainty assessment software.

This can be combined with its "Roxar RMS" reservoir modelling software, to enable uncertainties to be quantified across the complex reservoir characterisation and development workflow.

This will help oil companies improve risk management for the reservoir's production.

Emerson will make improvements to the "proxy" based history matching technique, which was developed by research and trials at Statoil, which has shown to be a "very effective" means of using historical data to reduce the uncertainty of production forecasts, Emerson says.

It will implement Statoil's Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) algorithms for history matching and uncertainty, a technique which is particularly good for the production effects seen in 4D seismic data, Emerson says.

There will be a continued focus on integrated workflows between geological modelling, simulation, the forward modelling of seismic and history matching.
