Malaysian national oil company Petronas has signed a memorandum of understanding with OPITO to provide technical training, safety training and competency development to its offshore workforce.

OPITO is an organisation owned by the oil and gas industry.

OPITO will assess and accredit health, safety and environment (HSE) programs offered by Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and PETRONAS' Group Health, Safety and Environment Division (GHSED).

It will also provide learning visits, staff attachments, student internships and network access.

The agreement was signed in October at the PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur by PETRONAS' vice president of human resource management Puan Raiha Azni Abdul Rahman and OPITO's Group chief executive David Doig.

'PETRONAS is creating a regional hub of excellence in learning and safety training," said Mr Doig. "Through the INSTEP training facility it is establishing a world class centre for the oil and gas industry where innovation and quality will be at the core of everything it does."

'The training programmes will deliver world class safety and technical skills and globally recognised certification.
