SMT joins Upstream Reference Architecture Initiative

Seismic Micro-Technology (SMT) will participate in an initiative to define a common information technology (IT) reference architecture in the  upstream oil and gas industry.

The goal of the initiative is to improve productivity and integration in the oil and gas exploration and production industry through a “unifying IT language”.
 
In recent months, the Microsoft Upstream Reference Architecture (MURA) Initiative participants have advanced the development of architecture components and expanded the reach of the collaboration. They have also defined the foundation structure for the reference architecture based on a three-level service-oriented architecture: business architecture, application architecture and infrastructure architecture. Participants have developed scenario demonstrations that illustrate how interoperability can be improved among various products and vendors.
 
The Microsoft and Accenture Upstream Oil & Gas Computing Trends Survey, which polled 172 upstream oil and gas professionals, found that for 44 percent of respondents, the upstream data explosion continues to have a negative effect on their ability to get their work done. They most often cited the following challenges:
 
·     Difficult and time-consuming search of diverse systems to find information (44%)

·     Data appearing in unstructured forms not easily captured or archived (44%)

·     Data stuck in individual repositories and not easily shared across disciplines (43%)

·     Too much redundant and/or unnecessary data available (35%)

“The increase in digital information, due to wider adoption of technologies like rich azimuth and pre-stack data continues at an exponential pace,” said Ali Ferling, managing director, Worldwide Oil & Gas Industry for Microsoft. “In order to make sense of this deluge, organizations must ensure that information can be standardized, analyzed, and shared across the entire asset team. With the inclusion of SMT and its KINGDOM geoscience software in the MURA initiative, a critical geoscientific interpretation tool for customers will now be a part of the standardized reference architecture.”
 
“SMT customers have increasingly highlighted the challenge in sharing data across multi-vendor environments. As a result, we have attempted to both automate the interchange of this information and help promote standardization of this data,” said Randy Harvey, Vice President of R&D for SMT. “Our forthcoming KINGDOM Connect technology helps automate geoscientific data transfer across vendors in real time. And now we are proud to join Microsoft and its partners in the MURA Initiative to help define standards to simplify data management for our customers.”
 
SMT will be at the Microsoft Global Energy Forum 2011 in Houston on January 18th to share more details about this initiative.
