We characterised a reservoir, says Fugro-Jason

Friday, August 3, 2012

Reservoir characterisation technology company Fugro-Jason reports that 6 wells drilled in the Malay Basin, Malaysia, have confirmed the company's previous analysis of the basin, detecting thin (12m) reservoir layers in sandstone.

Fugro-Jason used its deterministic reservoir characterisation software to interpret and analyse the thin hydrocarbon reservoirs, using seismic data and well logs.

The characterisation "accurately determined the location and extent of hydrocarbons," the company says.

'Traditional seismic interpretation methods could easily result in incorrect conclusions with this kind of reservoir,' claims Eric Adams, managing director of Fugro-Jason.

'In fact, fluid predictions before Fugro-Jason's seismic inversion were quite different from the study findings."

"The presence of gas and an underlying coal layer also caused interpretation uncertainty in the original seismic reflection data."

"This ambiguity was removed by the Fugro-Jason RockTrace process."

"Precision was particularly critical because our client planned to place horizontal wells into the thin oil leg, which is only 12 meters thick.'

The analysis could differentiate gas, oil, brine, sandstone and shale.

After the study, 2 appraisal wells and four horizontal development wells were drilled, and the findings for sand and fluid distribution matched the predictions.

Fugro Jason's software is particularly suited for challenging reservoirs, such as thin bed reservoirs, shale oil plays and shale gas plays, and subsalt formations, the company says.

The software can do geostatistical reservoir characterization; wavelet estimation and well to seismic ties; and 2D and 3D seismic inversion.
