Samit Sengupta - - Geologix
Using WITSML to Bring Geology to Your Desktop - A Case Study
Samit Sengupta has over 30 years’ experience in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. After graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, with a degree in Civil Engineering, Samit worked in the subsurface data acquisition and analysis industry in Australasia, USA, Africa and Europe with Schlumberger, Gearhart and Halliburton, prior to creating Geologix, an international software company providing products and services for aggregation, analysis, interpretation and visualization of well data
Geologix Geologix has been a leading technology and engineering application development company since 1995, focused on providing innovative and reliable solutions for well monitoring, pipeline data management and integrated operations. We understand the benefits of agility in helping to tackle the constancy of change. Our upstream expertise, software and services will improve performance across operations, allowing you to transform behaviours and use enabling technologies more effectively.
Geologix works with over 200 customers in more than 60 countries worldwide. Our world-class, globally distributed team of geoscientists, engineers and software developers provide systems, tools and solutions to reduce cost, improve operations and streamline the flow of real-time data and information to the desktop. Geologix provides users with a full package of technology, domain consulting, onsite handholding, knowledge transfer, maintenance and support, with geoscientists, engineers and domain experts on call twenty-four hours a day. Smart Solutions for Legacy Data Geologix's innovative approach to engineering applications' development provides significant advantages to their customers by significantly reducing effort, shortening delivery time, and lowering overall project uncertainty.
Many oil & gas organisations have had to live with technologically challenging but irreplaceable legacy data, all of which requires time-consuming, costly maintenance and upgrading. The industry has developed 'work-arounds', but this is not a viable long-term approach. Geologix, in line with their desire to streamline and improve processes to reduce cost and improve the end-user experience, has evolved a smart solution to transform legacy data without compromising on quality or integrity.
The Geologix presentation will demonstrate their live project experience in applying innovative technologies and industry domain experience to the challenges of legacy data, and put forward their solution for data transformation - from unstructured, often unusable data to a readily available, user-friendly data model, fully integrated with today's business needs.

Jonathan Henderson - Managing director - Foster Findlay Associates (ffA)
Integrating Interpretation Expertise and Objective Data Analysis in 3D Interpretation
Talk Description. Seismic interpretation is highly dependent on the assessment of the interpreter. Due to the subjectivity this introduces and the need for efficiency many attempts have been made to develop automated interpretation tools. However, seismic data remains a non-unique, abstract and incomplete representation of the geology of the subsurface and the most efficient tool that we have for resolving the ambiguities and “filling in the gaps” is the expertise of the human interpreter. Therefore we need to find ways to effectively combine the power of visualisation and the expertise of the interpreter. One area in which this is particularly important is in being able to accurately delineate geological elements as 3D objects that can be used in the construction of a geological model.
To tackle this problem we need to understand both the power and frailties of the human visualisation system. On the positive side, we are able to discern and recognise features in very complex scenes due to our ability to adapt to wide variations in contrast and scale and because we are able to compare mentally what we see now with previous experience. Interpreters bring the knowledge and experience that are needed to imprint geological information on the data analysis and ensure that we work within the constraints of what is geologically reasonable. On the negative side, our visual system is limited as we are restricted to analysing only what we can see on the surface and, due to the abstract nature of the features that we are examining, can be quite easily “fooled”.
This talk will discuss briefly some of the common ways in which visual perception can impact on our interpretation before describing a technology for geobody delineation that allow us to work very interactively with visualisation systems to define the 3D geometry of geological features in ways that simultaneously utilise interpretation knowledge and data derived information. This technology, Adaptive Geobodies, combines sophisticated analysis of the variation in the statistics within complex multi-attribute images to drive geobody delineation. Key to the utility of the Adaptive Geobodies is that it is fast and easy to use.
The power of the Adaptive Geobodies comes from the fact that it encompasses the human observer’s ability to overcome the ambiguities inherent in seismic data but is not affected by perception issues.
Jonathan Henderson is a physicist with over 20 years of extensive experience in imaging and image analysis. His initial interests were in medical imaging, where he had worked on developing new methods for extracting and quantifying the information contained in x-rays and ultrasound scans. Since joining ffA in 2001, he has used his knowledge of medical image analysis to help the Company develop unique seismic image analysis technologies. Jonathan has been Managing Director of ffA for 5 years during which time the Company, its global customer base and its software portfolio have all expanded substantially.
Foster Findlay Associates (ffA) Foster Findlay Associates Limited ('ffA') is a world leader in the development and commercialisation of 3D seismic image processing technology for the oil and gas industry. ffA provides world-leading geological expression software and services to the majors, NOC's and independents worldwide Its flagship application GeoTeric, bridges the gap between processing and 3D interpretation by directly translating geophysical data into geological information. GeoTeric, gives the interpreter the power to make the most informed seismically driven decisions and provide the basis for increased well success across a variety of geological environments. GeoTeric has powered 300 successful projects for more than 100 E&P companies worldwide. ffA is a UK company with offices in Aberdeen, Houston, Newcastle upon Tyne and London.
