Optimal supply chains
Tuesday, October 25, 2011, Aberdeen, Aberdeen Marriott Hotel
Building the optimal supply chain in the mature province
This event is for people at oil companies and contractors who are involved in supply chain management, inventory management, maintenance, IT management, materials handling, and people providing related services, looking to find ways to keep the offshore supply chain running more safely, reliably and cost effectively. Please forward this message to any colleagues you think might be interested.
Topics covered include improving inventory management for both critical and non critical items, using data from your ERP system; improving surplus / returns management (bringing supplies back from offshore); improving management of the spares supply chain with better data; and getting better integration of all your software systems, such as asset management, inventory, purchasing, cost control, asset availability, hire tracking, spares, repairs and project management.
The conference is chaired by Tom Smith, executive chairman and founder of Nessco Group Holdings and a past co-chair of Oil and Gas UK.
We have speakers from Asset Management Services LLC (a US company which provides software to ConocoPhillips in Alaska among others); Absoft, Aberdeen’s biggest independent provider of SAP services; sparesFinder and IFS.
Delegates registered so far include Total E & P (materials and marine logistics co-ordinator); BP Exploration (decommissioning manager); Wood Group (global supply chain manager, purchasing and materials manager); KCA Deutag (supply chain manager, maintenance engineer); Apache North Sea (materials and inventory supervisor, maintenance manager); Technip (IT director); Britannia Operator Ltd (inventory controller); GDF Suez (IS business analyst).
Most supply chains work reasonably well, contracts are placed, jobs get done. Thus the first question is - is it worth making the investment and effort required to change a supply chain from one which functions adequately to one which is extremely efficient? For example, to make sure that required maintenance items are where you need them to be, and identify the best way to go about it.
Also, many oil companies have made a lot of effort into streamline their supply chains but ended up with a system which people find ineffective, too bureaucratic to meet their needs - how can a system be developed which meets the needs of the people who use it, as well as improving the company’s profitability at large? Do you really need centralised control - or do you just need more control?
A truly effective supply chain would deliver services and technologies that transformed the performance of a company’s business – for example reduced cycle times or costs/boe.

Keith Davidson - Project manager - Absoft
Investment recovery through optimised surplus/returns management
Talk Description. Supporting presenter: Bjoern Harzer, principal consultant, Absoft.
Significant improvements in cost and supply chain performance can be achieved by focusing on optimising how the returns process is managed to ensure investment recovery.
In a mature oil and gas province such as the North Sea, where operating costs continue to rise, cost control is paramount.
Typically production, exploration and projects staff are focused on getting the job done on time and to budget, with less emphasis placed on what happens to materials and equipment which are returned onshore.
Mr Davidson and Mr Harzer will explore the challenges involved in managing the returns process. They will discuss how these challenges can be met by effectively managing people, processes and technology across the business and outline the benefits of adopting such an approach, using practical examples.
Keith Davidson is a highly experienced Project Manager, who joined Absoft in 2010. He has spent the last 4 years of his career working in the Oil and Gas industry managing multi-million pound projects. For the past 12 months Keith has been engaged with a major oil and gas operator, managing a variety of projects relating to supply chain process optimisation.
Bjoern Harzer joined Absoft 6 years ago as a Supply Chain consultant with a background in the oil and gas, automotive and manufacturing industries. He is recognised as one of Absoft’s leading oil and gas solution architects and specialises in applying SAP technology to enable efficient supply chain management processes. His career in SAP spans more than 13 years.

David Stroud - CEO - Sparesfinder
Spares alchemy - converting poor data to valuable savings
Talk Description. With so many acronyms in the IT world, David will seek to clarify the underlying business issues around spare parts and describe a holistic approach to addressing the spares supply chain, integrating the materials data requirements to the delivery of inventory savings
David co-founded sparesFinder Ltd in 1998. He is a Cambridge-trained engineer, sponsored by the Royal Navy. In active service he managed 40 aircraft-carrier-based engineering staff and subsequently became responsible for formulating Fleet Air Arm Logistics policy in the Ministry of Defence. After leaving the RN he worked at Citibank for 6 years, firstly as an IT project manager and then as a derivatives trader specializing in European Government Bond Options based in Frankfurt and London.
Since founding sparesFinder, David has led the development of a series of innovative software tools to provide rapid visibility and analytics of engineering inventory across multiple systems, and to create a controlled environment in which to clean and manage master data.
Used daily in over 90 countries by some of the world's best known companies, these fully hosted, easy to use tools are immediately available to sparesFinder’s customers via a web browser, saving them time, money and hassle.
Sparesfinder sparesFinder’s customers understand that high quality materials data is a valuable asset but know that it’s not easy to either achieve this or sustain it. Moreover, it is important that they generate a good return from the investment of time and resources they make.
We work with our customers to deliver that high return. Not only do we have one of the best materials data cleaning and governance applications in the market, but we can also deliver a full service package to support your project. We are a “Software as a Service” company (i.e. we host and manage all of the software and databases, and you just use a web browser), so the IT hassle is low, the implementation rapid and the costs very competitive.
Clean data is the foundation of our customers’ success, but our integrated analytical and search applications will quickly give them the information and leverage needed to drive the benefits to the bottom line, reducing operating costs and working capital requirements quickly, and keeping them low.
