You've probably heard about the promise of using analytics to work out the optimum way to improve production on your field. Our conference in Aberdeen on Sept 23rd explores how close this promise is to reality.

Mr Holdaway is author of "Harness Oil and Gas Big Data with Analytics: Optimize Exploration and Production with Data Driven Models" published by Wiley in July 2014. He worked for several geophysical companies in his 15 year career, primarily at Petroleum Development of Oman as a geophysicist. He has worked over the past 15 years for SAS Institute to help harness SAS analytics to geophysical, geologic and reservoir engineering data to ascertain exploratory data analysis and appropriate modeling approaches to enable more robust forecasting and identify new field-reengineering strategies in mature assets. He has a Masters Degree in Geophysics from Durham University UK. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society in London.

Big data analytics for production: integrating the reservoir management disciplines
Talk Description. - examples of integrating large and diverse data domains from the subsurface, reservoir and production domains. I will explain some of the jargon from the big data analytics paradigm and show the reality of applying a big data analytics approach to tasks such as data mining and decision support. - This emerging set of techniques of analysing all possible data can deliver high value and robust insight to support production decisions from operational to strategic timeframes.
Duncan Irving is the Teradata Industry Consultant for Oil & Gas in EMEA. Duncan joined Teradata from the University of Manchester where he instructed in geophysical interpretation and geocomputational methods for the last seven years. He was involved in consulting and research projects involving user interactions with massive subsurface datasets and more general upstream data management, and he continues to maintain research links as an honorary lecturer. One long term project was with Teradata and he drove the development of Teradata's capabilities in the Upstream Oil and Gas area. This time provided him with a deep understanding of the capabilities of Teradata and how they can best be used in the petroleum industry. He is a geophysicist and also has a PhD in glacial geophysics and geotechnical engineering (why frozen ground moves faster during climate warming and how this affects infrastructure). Duncan lives in the hills outside Manchester with his wife and three children. He is a mountaineer, fell runner and is a card-carrying member of the CAMpaign for Real Ale.

Improving production with life-cycle based analytics
Talk Description. To understand the potential impact of life-cycle based analytics on production and asset exploitation, we must first understand how these will be implemented when harnessing what is now popularly referred to as the “3rd Platform”, together with the associated new “Data Fabric” for embracing data of all types.

Using analytics to transform the way we drill and produce more shale plays - Are we doing the right things and are we doing them the right way?
Talk Description. The challenges of drilling more wells to meet growing production targets in an unconventional drilling factory model, decreasing environmental footprints and bridging the Big Crew Change’s experience turnover, means that what is good today, may not be good enough for tomorrow.
While the assembly line was institutionalized by Henry Ford a little more than 100 years ago, it is just now making its mark on the oil and gas industry. Historically, much of the data required to optimize the assembly line in shale production ? dates, the time gaps between them, and the causes of those gaps ? has been neglected or not treated as important in larger offshore projects that simply do not have the same challenges. Shorter production cycles are not a priority for offshore; but, in shale, time to market is a real issue. Shale wells tend to lose 2/3 of their production in the first 2 years vs. offshore wells, which routinely produce for 30 years. For example, by understanding the time it takes between the well having been completed and being put online, then reducing this time by 2 days per well, would result in 720 days a year, assuming 30 wells are drilled per month. This is a substantial amount of potential production time wasted. Accurately collecting this information and making it available for analytical use becomes the basis for optimization scenarios.
More timely analysis to the causes of NPT (or non-productive time) in drilling operations will give an operator greater insight to areas that need improvement and areas where this insight can produce real bottom line value.
