Data Quality Metrics – Considerations for Achieving Trusted Data

Talk Description.
This paper describes a holistic data quality program that addresses what trusted data means and compares this with quality that is tracked in a data quality metrics initiative. The paper further shows that in order to achieve trusted-ness in data, it is necessary to combine data quality metrics and the involvement of a Subject Matter Expert.

Large organizations typically have significant legacy data for which the quality is likely to be lacking, this paper also looks at how transparency and progress tracking via a dashboard can be achieved such that all data quality improvements efforts can be easily seen, contribute to the overall program and is always progressive.

With the strong focus on business requirements, clarity and easy access to data is another critical element and is part of the overall data quality program of PETRONAS.
Phillip Lesslar is principal consultant, Technical Assurance, Compliance & Technical Assurance, Group Technical Data, Project Delivery and Technology, with PETRONAS Exploration and Production.

He is from Miri in Malaysia has been working in a data management role for over 35 years. Even during his early days as a micropaleontologist working with Tertiary Foraminifera of NW Borneo, he was managing biostratigraphy databases and developing probabilistic approaches to paleo-environmental interpretations using fossil data.

He then transferred to geocomputing and information management in team lead and principal consultant roles in data and data quality management, doing various assignments in the Netherlands (The Hague, Rijswijk) and US (Houston, TX). In this capacity he has been responsible for initiating and coordinating the development of Global EP Data Standards, Data Quality Metrics and for how these will be deployed globally.

He is now responsible for Technical Assurance of Technical Data, in the Technical Data department of PETRONAS’s Petroleum Management Unit (PMU) in Kuala Lumpur.

He and his wife exercise and play badminton as much as they can. They have 2 children and travel is a priority on the family agenda.
