Our "Digital Subsea" conference in Aberdeen Hilton Treetops hotel on Monday June 2, looked at new techniques, strategies and technology to monitor the integrity of subsea infastructure.

Topics included subsea video, acoustic fibre optic monitoring, well head monitoring, leak detection and monitoring electrical connections, with speakers from Oceaneering, Pulse, WFS, Optasense and Bennachie Electronics.

Subsea technology has made great advances - but is still limited by our abiilty to monitor, communicate and control what is happening on the seabed, and operate subsea equipment.

The better we can work with subsea equipment from the shore, the more we can ensure equipment reliability and integrity, and the more equipment we can be comfortable running on the seabed.

The prize is enormous - recovery rates from subsea developments are often less than half of what is seen from conventional topside developments, according to Paal Kibsgaard, CEO of Schlumberger (speaking at the Trondheim Integrated Operations conference in September 2013).
