Talk Description. How data science was used to interpret the subsurface - with a statistical analysis on fossilised foraminifera (marine organisms) in well samples
Data science is a fairly recent subject area that is comprised of several different skillsets, ranging from statistics, probability, mathematics to programming, machine learning and domain knowledge. These separate subjects and techniques have been around for a long time but have mostly been used individually and not in an integrated way which is what data science is all about. There are as yet not many examples of how data science can be applied to EP data.
The case study described is not a recent one and was done long before the name “data science” was coined. It however, embodies what data science is about and is intended to be illustrative rather than current.
One activity carried out by biostratigraphers is the interpretation of paleo-environments based on foraminiferal occurrences in well samples. This activity, however, is frequently inconsistent and depends on the experience of the biostratigrapher. The paper describes a case study detailing the collation, analysis and development of a probabilistic approach to paleo-environmental interpretation using foraminifera. The tools and techniques used in combination to solve and improve this particular business problem is what is now called data science |
Phillip Lesslar is principal consultant, Technical Assurance, Compliance & Technical Assurance, Group Technical Data, Project Delivery and Technology, with PETRONAS Exploration and Production.
He is from Miri in Malaysia has been working in a data management role for over 35 years. Even during his early days as a micropaleontologist working with Tertiary Foraminifera of NW Borneo, he was managing biostratigraphy databases and developing probabilistic approaches to paleo-environmental interpretations using fossil data.
He then transferred to geocomputing and information management in team lead and principal consultant roles in data and data quality management, doing various assignments in the Netherlands (The Hague, Rijswijk) and US (Houston, TX). In this capacity he has been responsible for initiating and coordinating the development of Global EP Data Standards, Data Quality Metrics and for how these will be deployed globally.
He is now responsible for Technical Assurance of Technical Data, in the Technical Data department of PETRONAS’s Petroleum Management Unit (PMU) in Kuala Lumpur.
He and his wife exercise and play badminton as much as they can. They have 2 children and travel is a priority on the family agenda.

Talk Description. Data standards are an essential component of the data management challenge in any organization. This is especially true in an upstream organization where the cost of data acquisition is significant and the data entropy effect is high. Much of the value of data is derived in workflows, reusability and sustainability. However, the creation of good data standards is not easy. It is not exciting, with no quick short term gains, tedious, requires meticulous checking of dependencies within the organization as well as knowledge of the availability of similar work outside the organization. Very often, this work is also not well recognized. This paper describes the countless effort it takes to develop and implement the technical data standards for PETRONAS Upstream business. The journey still continues to ensure sustainability of the implementation. |
