Clustering Considerations in the Machine Learning Workflow – Examples with Exploration Data

Watch Video     View PDF
Talk Description.
There is currently a very high interest in machine learning and its potential applications for oil and gas. However, the usefulness of any tool is dependent on its correct application and this is no different with Machine Learning (ML). AI has been making its way into so many aspects of our lives that it is almost taken for granted that its implementation will guarantee success. This is far from the truth and if AI and ML are not used appropriately, it could lead not just to non-success but in the worst case, wrong and costly decisions.

This paper focuses on cluster analysis which is a key classification tool, but still just one of many tools and techniques in the ML toolkit, with the aim to highlight the need that aspiring data scientists in the oil and gas domains arm themselves with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out effective ML projects. Example exploration data are used and should help the audience not only to relate to the points made but also to trigger ideas about how they can approach their own data sets.
He is from Miri in Malaysia. He started his career as a biostratigrapher specializing in quantitative techniques but subsequently in data management roles accumulating over 40 years of experience.

He has worked in team lead and principal consultant roles in micropaleontology, data, data quality management and data science, primarily in Malaysia but also doing various assignments in the Netherlands (The Hague, Rijswijk) and US (Houston, TX). His special interests include data quality metrics, quantification of data management business benefits and probabilistic paleo-environmental interpretation based on foraminifera. He now runs Precision-DM, a data solutions consulting company.

He has developed and produced 2 multimedia CDs, co-authored a book on the geology of Miri and is also the main author of the 3 part “Data Quality Metrics” guide published under Energistics. He and his wife exercise and play badminton as much as they can. They have 2 children and travel is a priority on the family agenda.

Wells (data) Compliance Smart Dashboard

Talk Description.
In BSP, we have been actively exploring and developing new wells however data quality has been poorly managed which contributes to time and costs wasted because of bad decision or facing uncertainty when reviewing areas for new hydrocarbon opportunities. Due to these challenges, engineers now realised that having trusted and quality data at your fingertips are vital for decision making.

To continuously govern wells data with more than 100 data entry checked daily has been a burden to Technical Data Management team. At the same time, the data loaded into corporate database mustadhered with Operation Reporting Standards. As exploration activities increases, it is becoming morevital for Technical Data Management team to find a sustainable solution moving forward.

With continuous improvement mindset, we have successfully developed ‘Wells Compliance SmartDashboard’ solution using tools from Spotfire and SQL. This dashboard will act as a tool to check data entry in corporate database against Operation reporting standards in real time. As a result, the dashboard has help engineers to promptly key in the correct data based on the rules defined by BSP standards.

Furthermore, it increases engineer awareness on data quality and standards. The primary purpose of the dashboard is not only reducing the non-value-added time like manual data quality check but to calculate each drilling rigs competitiveness on data quality performance.

The interactivity and dynamically of Spotfire is just a click away which directly point the error in real time.Eventually it has sped up our data quality checking process from days to minutes before well status diagram is generated and approved. This tool has benefited both Data Management team and Well engineering team
