You've probably heard about the promise of using analytics to work out the optimum way to improve production on your field. Our conference in Aberdeen on Sept 23rd explores how close this promise is to reality.

You can hear a case study about how data driven models were used to optimise production in a mature unconventional reservoir; learn from US experience using analytics to transform the way shale plays are drilled; the different ways to use analytics to optimise production and work out when to repair assets; and how to work out which wells are worth giving attention; how to make a fast comparison between multiple field development plans; and how to understand reservoirs using dynamical symmetry.

Our opening speaker is Keith Holdaway, principal industry consultant at SAS Institute, and author of a new book, "Harness Oil and Gas Big Data with Analytics: Optimize Exploration and Production with Data Driven Models" published by Wiley in July 2014.

He is followed by Duncan Irving, Teradata Practice Leader, Oil and Gas [Europe, Middle East, Africa, and one of the industry's leading thinkers on the best ways to use analytics to achieve value. We also have speakers from EMC, LMKR, Communicative Algebra and Noah Consulting.

We have a partner event on the following day, 'using analytics to manage asset integrity'.

Limited tickets available for £25 + VAT

Academic tickets (student / lecturer) available for £5 with voucher code 'academic'

Case study; Using data-driven models to optimize production

Watch Video     View PDF
Talk Description.
Production optimization is about leveraging and scaling the skills of the workforce; transforming the ways work is done collaboratively; and streamlining the key organizational pillars of people, processes and technologies.

Hydrocarbon accounting that addresses production volume auditing, loss management, forecasting and regulatory reporting are activities that can all benefit from analytical data-driven models geared towards production optimization.

Let us walk through a case study to illustrate the adoption of data-driven models in unconventional reservoirs that optimize production in a mature asset.
Mr Holdaway is author of "Harness Oil and Gas Big Data with Analytics: Optimize Exploration and Production with Data Driven Models" published by Wiley in July 2014. He worked for several geophysical companies in his 15 year career, primarily at Petroleum Development of Oman as a geophysicist. He has worked over the past 15 years for SAS Institute to help harness SAS analytics to geophysical, geologic and reservoir engineering data to ascertain exploratory data analysis and appropriate modeling approaches to enable more robust forecasting and identify new field-reengineering strategies in mature assets. He has a Masters Degree in Geophysics from Durham University UK. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society in London.

Big data analytics for production: integrating the reservoir management disciplines

Talk Description.
- examples of integrating large and diverse data domains from the subsurface, reservoir and production domains.
I will explain some of the jargon from the big data analytics paradigm and show the reality of applying a big data analytics approach to tasks such as data mining and decision support.
- This emerging set of techniques of analysing all possible data can deliver high value and robust insight to support production decisions from operational to strategic timeframes.
Duncan Irving is the Teradata Industry Consultant for Oil & Gas in EMEA. Duncan joined Teradata from the University of Manchester where he instructed in geophysical interpretation and geocomputational methods for the last seven years. He was involved in consulting and research projects involving user interactions with massive subsurface datasets and more general upstream data management, and he continues to maintain research links as an honorary lecturer. One long term project was with Teradata and he drove the development of Teradata's capabilities in the Upstream Oil and Gas area. This time provided him with a deep understanding of the capabilities of Teradata and how they can best be used in the petroleum industry.
He is a geophysicist and also has a PhD in glacial geophysics and geotechnical engineering (why frozen ground moves faster during climate warming and how this affects infrastructure). Duncan lives in the hills outside Manchester with his wife and three children. He is a mountaineer, fell runner and is a card-carrying member of the CAMpaign for Real Ale.

Improving production with life-cycle based analytics

Watch Video     View PDF
Talk Description.
To understand the potential impact of life-cycle based analytics on production and asset exploitation, we must first understand how these will be implemented when harnessing what is now popularly referred to as the “3rd Platform”, together with the associated new “Data Fabric” for embracing data of all types.

Truly scalable grid computing, cloud, virtualization, Hadoop, and other leading technologies have changed the architecture and infrastructure landscape, bringing the promised revolutionary benefits of an integrated oilfield and analytics solutions within reach and with clear business results.

As upstream moves towards attaining our 21st century business goals, the reality of the current situation is becoming clearer:
• the Digital Oilfield (DOF) has positioned us well for next step-change in Upstream operations, but has also failed to fulfill many of our lofty goal,
• harnessing the massive amounts of current and future data from key sources such as real-time streaming, operational data stores, and engineering applications and analytics across functions must be ubiquitous,
• true life-cycle management (well, field, asset, etc.) is critical for enabling agile business transformation, and
• the “business” will increasingly take a leadership position in petrotechnical initiatives, placing the demands of the end-users more squarely in the driver seat.

The above topics will be reviewed, followed by a case study discussion, demonstrating how a common DOF analytics solution approach can be practically extended across the exploration and production life-cycle through a Big Data 3rd Platform model and approach.
Chris Lenzsch is EMC’s Solutions Manager for Upstream Analytics. Chris started his career at Amoco Production Company gaining experience in the migration from the 1st Platform to the 2nd Platform and the associated data fabric switch to relational databases. For the past 10 years Chris has worked extensively in Digital Oilfield projects from FotF to iField to iOF to IOS to the Digital Asset. Chris recently left Halliburton Landmark to join EMC to help enable the uptake of the 3rd Platform and new Data Fabric for improved data utilization, cross-functional collaboration and bottom-line results.

Using analytics to transform the way we drill and produce more shale plays - Are we doing the right things and are we doing them the right way?

Watch Video     View PDF
Talk Description.
The challenges of drilling more wells to meet growing production targets in an unconventional drilling factory model, decreasing environmental footprints and bridging the Big Crew Change’s experience turnover, means that what is good today, may not be good enough for tomorrow.

While the assembly line was institutionalized by Henry Ford a little more than 100 years ago, it is just now making its mark on the oil and gas industry. Historically, much of the data required to optimize the assembly line in shale production ? dates, the time gaps between them, and the causes of those gaps ? has been neglected or not treated as important in larger offshore projects that simply do not have the same challenges. Shorter production cycles are not a priority for offshore; but, in shale, time to market is a real issue. Shale wells tend to lose 2/3 of their production in the first 2 years vs. offshore wells, which routinely produce for 30 years. For example, by understanding the time it takes between the well having been completed and being put online, then reducing this time by 2 days per well, would result in 720 days a year, assuming 30 wells are drilled per month. This is a substantial amount of potential production time wasted. Accurately collecting this information and making it available for analytical use becomes the basis for optimization scenarios.

More timely analysis to the causes of NPT (or non-productive time) in drilling operations will give an operator greater insight to areas that need improvement and areas where this insight can produce real bottom line value.

You may have a remote drilling operations center to help you drill faster wells, but do you have a business process monitoring capability to help you create a faster time to value?

Whether you are making a decision about asset management or governmental compliance, chances are good that the answers reside within your enterprise today. But can you quickly access that information? Re-creating or re-purchasing the data can be costly, error prone and time consuming. If you do have the data readily available are you able to extract and aggregate it from the various formats and systems across your enterprise and analyze it in order to make critical business decisions? Noah can.
