APS measures while drilling at 7580m HPHT in China

Friday, October 12, 2012

APS Technology of Connecticut reports that its measuring while drilling (MWD) tools have measured a high temperature, high pressure well in China, at total depth of 7,580m, true vertical depth of 6,670m, a new record for the company.

The previous record was about 600m (2000 feet) less deep, the company said.
Maximum temperatures were 147c static and 138 C circulating, and maximum pressures were 140 MPa.

The client was Sinopec (operator) together with Sinopec affiliated research company SRIPE. The well as in the Sichuan Basin.

APS Technology provides MWD/LWD, drilling optimization and vibration management tools.

The well was drilled with MWD on two sections.

The first section was 6019m to 6608m with 6.75 inch collars, the second was 6608m to 7580m with 4.75 inch collars.

APS said that SRIPE had failures with other MWD systems on the same well, before using APS.

'We are very impressed by APS's responsiveness and professionalism,' said Mr. Liu Kuanxiao, Expert Senior Engineer at SRIPE.

'Despite the challenges of high flow velocities, high hydrogen sulfide, high vibration and high shocks, the APS MWD and surface system delivered the performance this job required, with very few problems.'
