"Abnormal Situation Management" consortium meets in Hull

The "Abnormal Situation Management" consortium, an industry group focussing on plant safety, held its quarterly meeting in September in Hull, UK.

Members of the consortium include industrial manufacturers, vendors, and universities.

The consortium has been running since 1994. It addresses process safety challenges, using automation and operational best practise.

The meeting included a visit to BP's Hull facility, and had a workshop looking at the impact of procedures on abnormal situations.

Julie Bell, from the UK Health and Safety Laboratory, presented challenges in assessing high-reliability organizations, adoption of best practices in human factors and assessing human error in process hazard analysis.

Dr. C.M. Marijke Gordijn, from the University of Groningen, discussed the impact of lighting on operator performance and health.

There were also presentations on Digital Oil Fields, Alarm Enforcement and Progress on ISA106.
