The federal government sold an expected $1.2 billion worth of oil and natural gas drilling rights in the Gulf of Mexico, according to CNN. The U.S. Department of Interior announced that almost 39 million acres off Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were put up for lease, with offshore energy companies submitting 407 bids for more than 1.7 million of those acres, the U.S. Department of Interior announced.

Oil and gas rigs constitute a preferred target for terrorist and criminal activity because of their economic importance and the difficulty to secure large water ranges and open areas on land. Offshore rigs require maximum security due to their volatile and demanding environments.
