NOV - first to get information security management certification

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Drilling equipment provider National Oilwell Varco (NOV) reports that it has been certified for information security management, with ISO/IEC 27001:2005.

The company claims to be the world's first upstream drilling information service provider to receive this certificate.

"This certification provides one of the highest degrees of protection for upstream drilling information," NOV says.

The standard provides a systematic approach for continually auditing and enhancing security controls, and covers both digital and physical security.

It means that a customer's data is not released to anyone without written permission from the customer.

The aim is to mitigate the threat that upstream drilling information and associated drilling information could be stolen.

'A data breach is evident all too often and can have far-reaching implications," says Roger D'Ardenne of D'Ardenne Associates, a leading ISO management systems trainer and consultant.

"However, with the right processes and controls in place, as National Oilwell Varco has demonstrated with its certification, an organization demonstrates to its customers that they can be assured information security and the systems needed to manage it are indeed world-class.'

'ISO 27001 certification is something we definitely look for in companies we work with, especially those with systems throughout our organization,' said an (unnamed) IT Manager from a large drilling contractor in the US mid-west.

'We are very proud of this accomplishment, and it demonstrates our commitment to lead the industry in ways which directly benefit our customers', says Trey Mebane, Director of New Business Development for NOV's IMO division.
