PPDM and Energistics to develop well identification best practises

Saturday, April 14, 2012

The Professional Petroleum Data Management (PPDM) Association, supported by Energistics, is developing a global framework of best practises for well identification.

The aim is to improve clarity and consistency in oil company operations internationally.

It will develop best practise recommendations for well identification.

This project is not intended to develop a universal well identification or numbering system. The outcomes from this project will be used as the foundation for recommendations to revisions to well identification systems used in the US and Canada.

Currently there are many different working definitions of a 'well' in use, which cause problems exchanging and integrating data, PPDM says.

Many companies have developed internal definitions of what they consider to be a "well", "well bore" or "completed interval," but these do not necessary agree with those used by other companies and regulatory agencies.

"Tremendous benefits can be realized when information about how wells are defined and described can be standardized across our industry," PPDM believes.

Further information is available at www.WhatIsAWell.org

The project seeks active committee members, working up to 5 hours a week on the project, and observer / reviewers, working up to 5 hours a month.
