STRYDE,Projeo, Explor join forces to deliver seismic for CCUS CarbonSAFE project

Explor is deploying over 20,000 STRYDE Nodes to enable high-density 3D imaging for a CCUS project in Gibson City, Illinois, USA for Projeo Corporation.

The US Department of Energy funded CarbonSAFE project is being led by the Illinois State Geological Survey at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Affordable, small, and lightweight Nodal seismic technology together with Explor's IntelliSeis methodology transforms the economics of CCUS project development and operation.


STRYDE, a pioneering seismic technology provider, has deployed its Nodal land seismic acquisition system for Projeo Corporation on another Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) project in Gibson City, Illinois, U.S. as part of the Illinois State Geological Survey's CarbonSAFE Illinois Storage Corridor project.

Over 20,000 STRYDE Nodes are being deployed by seismic technology company Explor, coupled with ~8,000 vibroseis source points acquired using the ISSNTM methodology developed and trademarked by bp, ensuring high-density seismic is delivered at a significantly reduced price point for this geological sub-surface imaging project. This new 3D project, which covers about 8 square miles, will deliver a trace density of 20 million traces per square mile and follows a series of successful high-density 2D lines acquired by Projeo in the same area during 2021 using the STRYDE Nodal system.

CCUS is set to play a vital role in the energy transition, permanently locking away carbon produced from energy and industries that can't avoid emissions. Seismic data acquisition is a cornerstone of evaluating potential CCUS sites, identifying optimum injection locations, and later, post-injection, periodically confirming that CO2 is being safely and permanently stored in the subsurface. However, despite the strong technical fit for CCUS, until STRYDE was released to the market and deployed with agile solutions such as Explor's IntelliSeis methodology, the high price for seismic surveys with conventional equipment had been a barrier to its uptake for CCUS projects.

STRYDE's Nodal system was originally developed in the oil and gas industry, where it has been rapidly adopted by the market for exploration and reservoir development projects globally. The same technology enables users in any industry, including those without the financial resources of oil and gas, to acquire high-quality seismic data at an affordable price point. This has led to the company seeing a similar global uptake of their disruptive technology in industries such as CCUS, geothermal, and mining. In addition to delivering higher data quality at a lower price, the STRYDE system also reduces the environmental impact of land seismic and reduces Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) risk when compared to competing products.

This project win in Illinois sees STRYDE once again join forces with seismic acquisition specialists, Explor, who are frequent users of the STRYDE system. Explor recently deployed the STRYDE technology on a world record-breaking project in partnership with Carbon Management Canada. During this project, the smallest, lightest, and most cost-effective source and receiver equipment in the industry were used to deliver the highest land seismic trace density on the planet to date, producing superior image quality, while minimising environmental impacts.
