Total implements "GeoX" prospect assessment system

Friday, November 11, 2011

Oil major Total has implemented the GeoKnowledge "GeoX" prospect assessment system, which can be used to evaluate exploration prospects.

The system has been implemented in Total's offices in Paris, Pau, Stavanger, Aberdeen, Balikpapan (Indonesia), Buenos Aires, Pointe Noire (Congo Brazzaville), Luanda, Lagos and Dubai.

Over 200 exploration managers at Total have been trained to use it.

The contract is for over NOK 8m (USD $1.4m).

Total will use the system to replace its existing system, and move its existing prospect database onto GeoX.

Total decided to move to a new system because it wanted a single database for its worldwide prospect inventory.

The software can be used to assess prospects at different levels, and evaluate the results depending on different geological scenarios, which had previously been done in a separate system and not stored in a database.

Total liked the GeoX software because it meant it could keep the same prospect classification, risk model and post drill analysis which it was using before.

GeoX can also be used for assessment of shale gas opportunities.
