Updating PIDX code numbers

Tuesday, October 3, 2023

PIDX keeps a record of petroleum product code numbers which the oil and gas industry can use. Doc Studio and DTN developed an online tool which makes it easy for people to add new numbers to the list

Oil and gas e-commerce standards organisation PIDX maintains a list of product codes for items which oil and gas companies sell, such as aviation gasoline and fuel ethanol.

It has now developed an online system for new code numbers to be added to the list, working together with DTN and Doc Studio.

If someone requests a new product code on the PIDX website, the requests are diverted to DocStudio, where there is a New PIDX Codes request form.

The DocStudio software can manage the reviewing of the submission, including checking the description for accuracy and clarity. Then it can generate a code which is not already being used. It can update the company code list and push the data back to PIDX via its API.

This means that the same code is now available to all terminals, suppliers and customers.

The product code elements are the code itself; the production definition, such as 'unleaded regular'; and a description of the product. There are also company codes, with elements such as the name, physical address and e-mail address.

It means that terminals and suppliers no longer need to set up their own code systems, and means that code lists no longer have to be exchanged manually. Under the current process, if someone wants to review codes, they download a spreadsheet of codes and search through them.

The process is 'looking to make that a bit more friendly, and quicker to use. This will benefit any user of the product codes,' said Kris Pronske, senior implementation specialist with DTN.

The process can get much quicker - sending the form, filling the form, and publishing the data, said Alisa Konchenko, head of business development with DocStudio.

DTN, based in Minnesota, is a specialist in systems for managing supply chain data. DocStudio, based in California, makes systems to help synchronise and digitise work with supply chain data.
