Wintershall buys Petrofac/SPD's drilling management software

Friday, March 23, 2012

German oil and gas operator Wintershall has agreed to purchase the "WellAtlas" drilling management software developed by SPD, a well engineering company which is owned by engineering giant Petrofac.

The contract is worth £200,000 over two years.

Wintershall will deploy the software initially in Norway, followed by roll-outs in Germany, Holland, Argentina, the UAE, Libya, the UK and Qatar.

It will use the software to make sure it has a robust and consistent drilling system across the company.

It will also use the software to comply with legal requirements for having a system for managing well drilling, which apply in the Norwegian North Sea.

The software can be used to manage all aspects of well delivery, and can be used by many different staff members.

Modules include 'Lessons Learned', 'Action Tracking', and 'Risk Tracking'.

SPD is making a special configuration of the software for Wintershall.

SPD will also provide training.

'Due to an increased focus on drilling planning activity within Wintershall it was decided to tender for a software solution that would assist our operations," says Juergen Schamp, team lead drilling engineering for Wintershall.

"It is designed to provide assurance, bring consistency, underpin compliance, deliver auditability and bolster personnel competence," SPD says.

'Securing this agreement with Wintershall will enable SPD to build a strong relationship with Wintershall's well engineering departments around the world," says Mark Gillard, WellAtlas product development manager, SPD.

"This award demonstrates the importance that major operators are putting on robust well engineering management systems and will help provide us with the foundation to pursue an ambitious growth strategy for the product.'
